I can't teach this history often and fast enough:
Goddard flew the first liquid-fueled rocket in 1926 and held the patents on gyroscopic guidance, turbopumps, and gimbal steering.
The V2 design was simply German agents and embassy channels pulling his patent filings through the 1930s.
In March 1945 Goddard personally examined a captured V-2 and concluded it was built on his work. Of course inferior, because Nazis. The gyroscope in particular, so badly made.
By 1960 the US government paid Goddard's estate and the Guggenheim Foundation $1 million, the largest government patent settlement ever.
Not only did V-2-derived designs infringe his patents, the entire Paperclip project was a sham and a setback for America. Von Braun himself spent the postwar years crediting Goddard as ahead of everyone.

Cried in frustration over my emails at 7:30 am on a Monday morning about stupid shit that's going to happen in orbit and my inability to do anything about it, and my apparent inability to even organize others to do anything about it. It's going to be great week, I can tell.
@sundogplanets you do a pretty amazing job in spreading the words of good sense and science from 'a goat farm far far away' you know. These issues are huge and your shoulders are only so strong. The frustration is also huge I know (experience in other areas) but we are all 'but one person'. Keep doing what you do but watch out for the bit of frustrated mind that can start to blame yourself for somehow 'not being enough'. For that is, as we say here, "A load of old bollocks" 😁💕
@bagder honestly I had no idea that it did this already. But I also wonder if it’s not growing beyond the “do one thing really well” philosophy. SSH and others in Curl feels very foreign to me.
@Tsluijter curl does internet transfers really well. It speaks 27 different protocols. It has supported SCP and SFTP for almost twenty years already...

I spent years as SocialHub facilitator and know the frustrations. The W3C is also populated with app devs, albeit with different opinions wrt the future of social networking. The sad thing is that we have a fragmented ecosystem today and that is not good for the fediverse as a whole.
Ideally a whole end-to-end community-driven grassroots standardization effort would exist now, able to evolve fedi both in technical, socio-technical, and socio-cultural aspects.
What fediverse is, and importantly what it can be, is imho insufficiently discussed. Fediverse is merely an open technology space now, where devs build their apps.
But the stakes are much higher. Beyond our fedi there's an Epstein class, owners of AI and Social Media, who are building a technofascist society, using these technologies as their weaponry.
Fediverse can be our answer. An innovation by the people, for the people. But it won't be if its merely an open technology space.
